Mother nature tried to win two in a row at Gallatin Speedway but the crew didn't let that happen. With an overcast, unseasonably cold day every driver was a little tentative to haul to Belgrade Montana but 21 Wissota Street Stocks came out and with Paul Lease and Nick Hunter starting on the front row it looked like Deer Lodge would continue its reign of dominance at Gallatin Speedway.
Two by two all the way back Nick Hunter took the lead out of turn two on lap 1. Beau Brown was hot on Hunter's heels as they caught lapped traffic. When Hunter had to check up for the first lapped car, Beau Brown took a look but to no avail. With lapped traffic playing a huge role in the Street Stock lead battle, Beau Brown and Nick Hunter raced side by side mistake free, it came down to the last lap, last corner and Nick Hunter prevailed. Through a hard fought race and navigating lapped traffic at a premium the recent king of Gallatin Speedway stole the first checkered flag for the 2011 season. Beau Brown came home a disappointing second after coming within inches of victory.
Wissota Super Stocks have always had a hearty number of cars and the 17 who started the main event, did not disappoint. Kevin Scott last years' runner up in the track points started on pole with Emory Wells in second. When the green flag fell the fans knew they were in for a treat. Scott jumped out to a nearly insurmountable lead. Troy Hyde, Cal Rossner, and Dan Gunther thought differently. Hyde finally caught Scott and an epic battle raged lap after lap. Hyde squeezed by, led a lap and the caution flew for a spin. The game had been reset. Justin and Mark Rieker dawned new paint schemes and with only a handful of laps remaining they began to show their sinister faces. The laps wound down and Justin Rieker was only two car lengths back with the white flag flying. Troy Hyde gave it his all and crossed the finish line ahead of Rieker.
Hometown favorite, Emory Wells, would start on pole position for the A Mod main event. The only thing standing in front of Emory was 17 other modified drivers. A seven car battle for second place immediately took place with Wells running away with the lead. The seven car battle for second quickly escalated to a twelve car war. Then disaster struck for Gary Hill. Running in second place, a cloud of white smoke smothered the rest of the field and caused a spin. Once again Wells' huge lead evaporated. After the green, Casey Cromwell briefly challenged Wells' blue number 3, only to get out gunned into the third turn by Chad Johnson. The lead was now a battle with number 3 Emory Wells and number 3J, Chad Johnson. Once again, every leaders worst nightmare came to play, a caution flag. What was once a runaway race, was now a duel, featuring last years modified track champion (Erin Shane) and The Gibson Guitars 2010 winner, Emory Wells. Erin Shane had the lead when doom blanketed the 7 car of Tracy Wittenberg , possibly totaling his modified. After a very late crash knocked Wells out of the running, Erin Shane, stole the victory, walking away from runner up, Chad Johnson.
In conclusion opening night at Gallatin Speedway had it all. Close finishes, door to door racing, and big crashes. Absolutely no fan should have walked away with a frown.
